character detail

I hand-drew concepts of Pearl with her facial expressions being a focus in creating her character from the beginning.

To test the design of her face and bring her to life I sculpted a few expressions (in several iterations – I am very grateful to have been mentored on facial retopology by Digital Artist Marcus Boos).

I textured Pearl with a nod to her namesake, a black sea pearl – with an aura of elegance; iridescent and aloof, yet at the same time seeming to mysteriously invite us in. With a tiny hint of wickedness, a little remorse and glimpses of humanity, I imagine her to be involved in some kind of espionage.

I’m excited to exaggerate the expressions further in the next character!
